Your home has been adequately primed; your interior paint gives personality to your rooms; your home’s exterior color draws curb appeal. However, the job is not yet finished: don’t forget to cover your exterior living and entertaining spaces, like your deck, patio, porch, pergola, or gazebo, with attractive and protective exterior stains. With help from the Color Store, homeowners have ensured the right products for all their outdoor wood projects.

Choosing Your Exterior Wood Stain

  1. As always, before you choose your exterior stain, you should carefully consider your project: How much stain will you need? What kind of wood is your surface made from? What color would best complement your home? With exterior stains, homeowners have another factor to consider: what level of protection does your surface need? Thicker stains are more protective but will hide more of your wood’s texture. Thinner stains bring out the grain of your wood, and while they still provide UV protection, they will need to be reapplied in the future to prevent fading. Check if your stain is water-repellant, mildew-resistant, and cleanable; your wood stain’s durability will prolong the life of your deck.
  2. Timing is essential: You want to protect your exterior surfaces as soon as possible—without proper maintenance, your exterior wood can fade, warp, and soften in as little as a few months. Choose a heavy-duty stain that can withstand the trials of harsh weather and the traffic of barbecue season, and make sure you start staining at the right temperature and avoid any rainstorms—you don’t want blooming and streaks in your new deck stain!
  3. Enjoy your outdoor spaces quicker with fast-sealing, easily sprayable, or rollable products: Some of our stains require no priming, diluting, or thinning, so you can focus completely on the project. Easy touch-ups and recoats make future staining projects a breeze.
