How Does the Temperature Outside Affect My Exterior Paint Job?

Color Store • September 18, 2024

If you're considering taking on a DIY exterior painting project, it's important to know how the temperature outside can affect your paint job. The experts here at the Color Store, Inc. recommend our customers paint when temperatures are in the sweet spot between 50°F and 85°F, for the best results. This range ensures optimal drying and curing conditions for a long-lasting finish!

When the Cold Sets In, Paint Fails to Cure

When temperatures drop below 50°F, paint can start to thicken; some paints may even require temperatures above 55°F or 60°F for optimal performance. A thickened paint is problematic since it becomes more challenging to apply evenly.

Additionally, cold weather prevents paint from curing properly. Paint curing is a chemical process where the solvents in the paint evaporate, allowing the paint to harden and form a durable layer that protects against weathering, moisture, UV damage, and general wear and tear. In cold weather, this evaporation slows down, and the paint stays soft. So, unfortunately, it won't develop its full strength and protective qualities.

If your exterior paint job needs to be completed during the winter, do it during the warmest part of the day. Also, hold off on exterior painting if the forecast predicts a significant drop in temperatures overnight.

When the Heat Turns Up, Paint Dries Too Fast

Extreme heat typically causes paint to dry very quickly, potentially preventing it from properly curing and adhering to the surface. Since paint dries faster in the heat, the time you have to spread it evenly is reduced. Poor adhesion can cut the lifespan of your paint job short. Peeling and cracking appear quickly on poorly cured surfaces, which means you may need an unexpected repainting project sooner than you'd like. If you plan on painting on a hot day, avoid painting in direct sunlight or during peak heat. Early mornings or late afternoons are your best bet. We recommend working quickly and diligently if the job goes into midday. Otherwise, it's best to wait until more temperate weather is on the horizon.

When Temperatures Swing, Paint Faces the Consequences

Aside from it being too hot or cold out, we don't recommend performing an exterior painting job when temperatures are forecasted to drastically fluctuate. Significant temperature fluctuations can cause paint to expand and contract, leading to issues over time. Moreover, rapid temperature changes are often associated with shifting weather patterns that can bring precipitation or humidity. Too much moisture in the air prevents the paint from drying properly, resulting in uneven coverage, bubbling, or poor adhesion.

Additionally, high humidity causes exterior stains to remain tacky, so there is a longer window for dirt to stick.
