Choosing a Sheen
While the color you select is essential, the sheen you choose is equally as significant. Sheens range from flat to high-gloss, and each has its place within your home. Let's talk about where each sheen performs best.
- High-gloss is the easiest to clean paint sheen. It's extra-shiny and durable, making it an ideal choice for kitchens, cabinetry, and window trim. Since this sheen is very shiny, it will also show imperfections more prominently, so make sure you prep your surface properly.
- Semi-gloss is another durable finish that stands up well to moisture and grease splatter, making it a particularly good choice for kitchens and bathrooms.
- Satin is durable and easy to clean, but like the other higher sheens, it clearly shows mistakes and flaws and can be tricky to touch up further down the road. We recommend a satin finish for children's bedrooms and family rooms.
- Eggshell finish bears its name because of its similarity to the low shine of an eggshell. This sheen covers wall imperfections, and its medium-grade durability makes it a solid choice for dining rooms and other spaces where the walls aren't touched often.
- Flat paint gives off no shine and hides scuff marks and other imperfections very well. This sheen has the most pigment and provides the best coverage in a single coat, which saves time and money.
When choosing your sheen, remember that rich, dark colors have more colorant, which boosts the shine. If you're using one of these colors but don't want a high sheen, go down a step on the finish level. The higher the sheen, the higher the cost at $1 or $2 per gallon.

How to Select a Color
